England have decided to rest fast bowler Gus Atkinson from their upcoming ODI squad for the series against Australia to manage his workload after a taxing summer.

Olly Stone has been called up to replace Atkinson as he takes a well-earned break.

Atkinson, who emerged as a standout performer in England's pace attack, made a remarkable Test debut in July, taking 12 wickets against the West Indies at Lord's and finishing the summer with 34 wickets across six matches.

Despite his consistency alongside Chris Woakes in back-to-back series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka, signs of fatigue became evident during the Sri Lanka series, where he briefly left the field due to a quad issue.

England's stand-in Test captain, Ollie Pope, expressed optimism regarding Atkinson's fitness.

"I think he's okay," England's stand-in Test captain, Ollie Pope, said of Atkinson. "He's obviously got a couple weeks off now just to refresh and move forward. He's able to put his feet up now, but I think the way he bowled today and just chatting to him, he actually feels like it feels better today than it did when he first felt it so that's a positive for us. Fingers crossed he's all good."

It is worth noting that England and Australia will face off in a three-match T20I series and five-match ODI series from 11-29 September. The ODI series will begin on 19 September at Trent Bridge.

England ODI squad: Jos Buttler (capt), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, and John Turner.
