Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed to send a group of military officers to Pakistan for training.

Afghan and Pakistani officials believed that this significant policy shift signals deepening relations between the two neighbours.

The move was important for Pakistan as the two neighbours have become increasingly convinced that the US war effort in Afghanistan is faltering. Afghan officials said that Karzai has begun to see Pakistan as a necessary ally in ending the war through negotiations with the Taliban.

"This is meant to demonstrate confidence to Pakistan, in the hope of encouraging them to begin a serious consultation and conversation with us on the issue of [the] Taliban," Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Karzai's national security adviser, said regarding the training agreement.

Naz Ebr | 14 years ago | Reply The Afghan goverment wants to do that for restoring good diplomatic relations with Pakistan, otherwise, they have much more high-technique, well-trained and equiped armies of the world to train their army. Pakistan too depends on US trainers when it comes to train their forces againes gurilla war in the its western border.

Karzai has been a staunch critic of Pakistan, and over the past few months he has made a complete U-turn to secure his position. His decision has little or no wide support beyond his inner circle and is likely to alienate opposition political parties. Pakistan is again going to be accused of intefering in Afghanistan and propping up an unpopular regime, with limited influence outside Kabul. Pakistan thinks its winng influence, Karzai thinks that he is cementing his power base. Both have learnt nothing from history.

Please remember that it is the same so called muslim country and mindset that opposed Pakistan's inclusion in the UN in 1948, and now today they see value in behaving with Pakistan, so as to ally and seek help to bring the Talibans on the table? What a drama?
