The cult classic The Goonies is set to get a long-awaited sequel, with several original cast members expected to return. According to a source quoted by The Sun, production for the sequel is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, with a possible release in 2026 or 2027. The project has been in development for years, with discussions about a follow-up film ongoing for some time before receiving the official green light.
"The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally been given the go-ahead to move forward," the insider revealed. "The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to a new audience."
The original Goonies, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, was released in 1985 and became a cultural phenomenon. The movie followed a group of friends on a treasure-hunting adventure and starred Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Ke Huy Quan. The upcoming sequel is expected to capitalize on the growing popularity of youth adventure films, with Warner Bros. aiming to satisfy the high expectations of fans.
The insider also noted that "the youth adventure market is on fire" and that the film’s production team is eager to develop a plot that will resonate with both longtime fans and new viewers.
