Nicole Kidman left the Venice Film Festival early following the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.

During the event on Saturday, Sept. 7, the Babygirl director, Halina Reijn, announced Kidman’s departure and read a statement on her behalf. The 57-year-old actress had flown in for the festival, only to learn soon after that her mother had passed away.

Kidman’s statement, delivered by Reijn during what would have been her Best Actress acceptance speech for Babygirl, shared her grief: "Shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed."

Kidman expressed that her mother had shaped and guided her throughout life, dedicating the award to her: "I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina."

Reijn concluded the heartfelt message by saying, "We love you all, Nicole," to a full house at the festival. A representative for Kidman confirmed the news to PEOPLE, stating that the family is heartbroken and has requested privacy during this time.

Kidman has previously spoken about her close bond with her mother. In November 2023, she told PEOPLE that her mother had a significant influence on her career and style.

Kidman also told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2020 that Janelle encouraged her to pursue her goals, providing her with the strength and determination to succeed.
