Man accused of murdering doctor in Kolkata makes unusual demands in jail

Suspect Roy declined to eat standard prison meals provided to inmates and insisted on being served his favourite dish

A man accused of raping and brutally murdering a female doctor in Kolkata has made unusual demands while in jail.

Sanjay Roy, who was arrested on 9 August for the heinous crime, has refused to eat the standard prison meals, insisting on being served his favourite dish, chow mein.

According to Indian media reports, Sanjay declined to eat the usual meal of vegetables and bread provided to inmates, claiming he does not like plain food and is unaccustomed to it.

The prison authorities informed him that all inmates are served the same meal and no special arrangements would be made.

He was also told that he could either eat the day's menu of lentils and rice or go without food.

Earlier, Sanjay had also requested a soft bed and a clean sleeping area.

During his arrest, he reportedly stated that he should be taken to the gallows immediately or he would not spare anyone.

Sanjay Roy, who is also a police volunteer, was taken into custody after a female doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on 9 August.
