Filming has officially begun for the much-anticipated festive special of Gavin & Stacey, with James Corden sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the first day of production. The return of the beloved BBC sitcom, which last aired a special episode in 2019, was confirmed earlier this year, and fans are eagerly counting down the days until the new episode airs this Christmas.
Corden, who plays the character Smithy, took to Instagram to post a photo of the side of Smithy’s work van, which features the humorous advert, "Smithy’s: if your husband won’t do it – I will… Tilin, roofin, plasterin, & feng shui. Call me on 07700978978." Alongside the image, Corden captioned, "Day 1. Here we go x," sparking excitement among fans. One follower commented, "Smithster is back!! Don’t forget to mention the air fryer for Uncle Bryn. 'I’ll tell you for why?'" while another wrote, "This is the best picture I’ve ever seen in my life."
The new special, written by co-creators Ruth Jones and James Corden, promises to wrap up some of the unresolved storylines that left viewers with questions after the 2019 Christmas episode ended on a cliff-hanger. In July, Corden discussed the challenges of completing the script while balancing other commitments, telling Capital Breakfast hosts Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Kemi Rodgers that the process involved working in dressing rooms during their respective stage performances.
Gavin & Stacey originally aired from 2007 to 2010 and quickly became a cult favorite. The upcoming Christmas special will reunite the original cast and is set to be a significant television event this holiday season.
