Punjab police have detained a dangerous fugitive wanted in connection with a 2008 murder in Gujranwala, ending a 16-year manhunt.

The fugitive was arrested at Lahore Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Greece, where he had been living after fleeing Pakistan.

According to a police spokesperson, the fugitive had shot and killed a citizen in Gujranwala in 2008 before escaping abroad using illegal channels.

While in Greece, he obtained a Pakistani passport under a different identity. The Punjab police’s special operations cell issued a Red Notice for his arrest and maintained efforts to locate him.

The fugitive was apprehended at Lahore Airport just before boarding his flight to Greece, thanks to coordinated efforts by the police.

He was subsequently handed over to the Gujranwala police for further legal action.

Inspector General of Punjab Police, Dr Usman Anwar, praised the effective strategy employed by the special operations cell, which led to the arrest of the fugitive after 16 years.

He also urged for intensified efforts to capture other dangerous criminals on the A-category list.

This arrest brings the total number of fugitives captured from abroad this year to 67.
