Pakistan confirmed its third case of the mpox virus at Peshawar airport, and another suspected patient was transferred to a hospital in Karachi. The suspected case was a passenger who arrived from Jeddah. Earlier this month, the WHO declared the recent outbreak of the disease a public health emergency of international concern following the identification of a new virus variant, Clade 1b. The variant has raised global alarm because of its rapid transmission through routine close contact. However, the WHO has clarified that mpox is not the 'new Covid'. There is no need to panic at this stage, as the country has effectively managed previous cases and contained the disease. With the number of cases still very low, it is sufficient to warrant increased vigilance and preventive measures. At this stage, it is crucial to implement the Covid-era prevention, screening and surveillance measures to effectively contain the infection at the airports and ensure incoming passengers are properly screened.
Given its current economic conditions and the state of healthcare infrastructure, Pakistan cannot afford a new health emergency. The government must stay alert and continue to improve its surveillance and response capabilities. While the authorities have made a strong start, ongoing vigilance and public awareness are crucial to prevent the virus from spreading. The NCOC, which led the pandemic response, should prioritise the availability of testing kits, implement strict measures at entry points, and prepare isolation facilities to manage potential cases. These steps are essential, considering the historical precedent of mpox cases being imported into Pakistan. A broader outbreak can be avoided with an informed public and healthcare personnel who are well-equipped to handle the risks effectively. The country has dealt successfully with mpox cases in previous years, and there is no reason that it should falter now.
