Brittany Cartwright has officially filed for divorce from Jax Taylor, marking the end of their tumultuous relationship. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Cartwright, 35, filed on August 27, citing irreconcilable differences and requested primary custody of their 3-year-old son, Cruz. The couple, who met in 2015 and married in 2019, had been living separately for six months prior to the filing.

A source close to Cartwright shared with PEOPLE that this decision was a long time coming and not made lightly. "Brittany knew she had to do this for herself and her son," the insider revealed to PEOPLE, emphasizing that Cartwright filed for divorce to break the cycle of their troubled relationship. Despite the challenges, Taylor, 45, reportedly acknowledged that the divorce is the right decision, though he’s experiencing mixed emotions and trying to stay strong for his son.

Cartwright first hinted at their separation during a February episode of their podcast, When Reality Hits, explaining that she needed space for her mental health. The couple continues to co-parent and will still work together on their Bravo series, The Valley, despite their personal separation.
