Joint anti-dengue drive launched

RAWALPINDI:

The district health officials from Rawalpindi and Islamabad have decided to take joint action against the spread of dengue, particularly in the border areas of the twin cities, which have been declared high-risk zones from September 1 to October 31.

In response to the growing threat, the Islamabad District Health Department has urgently recruited 500 male and female daily wage workers for anti-dengue operations in the areas bordering Rawalpindi. These workers will receive a salary of up to Rs37,000, with strict policies in place for absenteeism, including salary deductions or dismissal. Similarly, Rawalpindi's Health Department has hired 700 new dengue patrol workers, who will undergo verification and training starting Saturday (tomorrow).

Medical experts have identified large amounts of standing rainwater and overgrown vegetation in the border areas as major factors contributing to the spread of dengue. These areas, which include Islamabad Expressway from Faizabad to Rawat, IG Principal Road, New Islamabad Airport Road, and Bhata Cattle Market, lack proper sanitation and have been neglected in previous anti-dengue efforts by both cities.

The administrations of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are known to enforce tax collection in these regions but have been reluctant to conduct necessary anti-dengue measures. This joint operation aims to thoroughly search, clear, and spray these areas, with each health department responsible for its jurisdiction.

Rawalpindi's DC has cancelled all leave for dengue workers until October 31, requiring 50% of them to work on Sundays.
