PESHAWAR:

International Literacy Day was observed in Upper Dir on Friday. The education department and district administration in collaboration with the Malakand Development Programme held a district level speech competition in which 140 middle and high schools students took part.

The speeches, “Literate Pakistan, Great Pakistan” aimed at drawing people’s attention to the need for mass literacy. The students highlighted the importance of education, calling it a basic human right.

“Education is directly linked to every aspect of life and it is impossible for any society to live in peace without being educated,” said the students.

They also demanded that the education system be revised and updated according to the requirements of the modern era, adding that development and prosperity in Upper Dir was not possible without the spread of education.

Muhammad Tahir, a student at Government Model School (GMS) Sheringal, won the boys’ speech competition, while Salman Ahmed from Government High School (GHS) Bibyawar got second position. Abdul Latif, a student of GHS Wari, achieved third position in the contest.

Similarly, Shahnaz Bibi from GMS Kass Dir won the girls’ speech contest, while Bushra Kifayat from GHS Wari achieved second position. Gulalai Jan, also from GHS Wari, stood third in the competition.

The students were given prizes and shields by the chief guest, Upper Dir Executive Magistrate Abdul Wali.
