Birmingham man dies 32 years after being shot, death ruled homicide

A Birmingham man, who was shot in 1992, has died and his death has been officially ruled a homicide.

Birmingham man Erving Gray, 49, has become the subject of a new homicide case in Birmingham, Alabama, stemming from a shooting that occurred over 30 years ago. 

Gray was shot on September 15, 1992, and a suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder at that time. 

On August 6, 2024, at around 7 a.m., police responded to a call at 920 Second Street North where they found Gray unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene. 

The coroner’s office determined that Gray’s death was due to a severe seizure linked to his old gunshot injury.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald confirmed that Gray was 17 years old when he was shot. The case has now been ruled a homicide, although the suspect in the original shooting had died in 1997. 

Gray’s death is now counted as Birmingham’s 104th homicide of the year, with the total number of homicides in Jefferson County reaching 131.
