Aaqib Javed sees shades of Mohammad Asif in THIS pacer
Sri Lanka’s bowling coach Aaqib Javed heaped praise on young pacer Asitha Fernando for his performance on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Old Trafford.
Fernando took 3/68, claiming key wickets including England captain Ollie Pope and senior batter Joe Root. Despite conceding runs at nearly five per over, Fernando’s ability to swing the ball both ways and his skiddy pace made him the most threatening bowler in the Sri Lankan attack.
Javed compared Fernando to former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif, famous for his control and subtle variations. "After Mohammad Asif of Pakistan, I saw that quality in him," Javed said. "Without changing his wrist, he can swing the ball both ways."
Drawing from his own experience, Javed recalled identifying Asif’s talent early. "I picked Mohammad Asif when he wasn’t in the system. That’s how I know Asif well. Asitha’s confidence has grown, and his wrist work is exceptional," he added.
Mohammad Asif took 106 wickets in 23 Tests, earning a reputation as a magician among fast bowlers before his career was cut short by a spot-fixing scandal in 2010.
