Flooding risks rise in Sindh and Balochistan’s low-lying areas; urban flooding possible in central Punjab

Pakistan's Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of a new monsoon system expected to bring heavy rains across the country from August 26 to 30, with southern regions likely to be most affected.

The system, originating from the Bay of Bengal, is forecast to enter Pakistan’s southern areas, causing heavy downpours in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, and other parts of Sindh. “From August 25 to 29, torrential rains are expected in Karachi, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, and Sanghar,” the Met Office said.

In Balochistan, the districts of Kalat, Lasbela, and Barkhan could see intense rainfall between August 26 and 30, raising concerns about flash floods and swollen streams.

Punjab, particularly Murree, Islamabad, Lahore, and other upper areas, may also experience rainfall from August 25 to 28. The Met Office highlighted the possibility of thunderstorms in northern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), including Hazara, Peshawar, and Mardan, during the same period.

Flooding risks are elevated in low-lying areas of Sindh and Balochistan, while central Punjab could face urban flooding. Additionally, landslides are a concern in northern K-P and Gilgit-Baltistan due to continuous rains.

Authorities have been urged to take precautionary measures in vulnerable regions, with warnings issued for potential disruption in transportation and communication networks.
