RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN:

Former deputy speaker Punjab Assembly Wasiq Qayyuam Abbasi and former member Punjab Assembly Umer Tanveer Butt rejected the police claims that they had made confessional statement or become approver against former prime minister Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi in 14 cases related to May 9 riots.

Submitting their written statements in the anti-terrorism special court, they said they never became approver against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi nor did they make any confessional statement before a magistrate or police investigation teams. They submitted that the police stance in this regard was baseless, adding the PTI founder always directed the party to hold peaceful protest.

The former MPAs also filed acquittal pleas for want of incriminating evidence against them.

The court accepted their pleas for hearing and summoned government prosecutor and investigating teams of all the cases on September 12.

In addition, former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed also filed acquittal pleas in all 14 cases. The arguments on Rashid's pleas will also be heard on September 12.
