DJ Cassidy is known for passing the mic between artists, but on Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, he’ll be passing the mic from state to state. Cassidy will bring some sparkle to the event as the musical director for the DNC’s nomination roll call, a first-time feature at the convention.

Cassidy, whose “Pass the Mic” concert series gained popularity during the pandemic, has curated a playlist representing each state. According to a source familiar with the convention, the song selections will be specific to each location but will align with the theme of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, focusing on “freedom, unity, hope, the future, and believing in each other,” our insider shared.

For instance, California delegates will nominate Harris to the tune of Tupac Shakur’s “California Love,” while New York’s anthem will be “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. In Texas, instead of Harris’ campaign theme song “Freedom” by Beyoncé, Cassidy will play Beyoncé’s country track “Texas Hold ‘Em” as Texas delegates make their nomination.

This isn't the first time Cassidy has energized Democratic leaders. He was a favorite DJ of former President Barack Obama during his two terms and has also collaborated with VP Harris in the past, including during her 2020 presidential campaign and her successful run with President Joe Biden.

Fans were quick to compare this with the recent Republican National Convention, expressing their preferences between the two events. One fan shared, “I’m sorry but this #DNC2024 roll call with DJ Cassidy, themed state music and party/club atmosphere is blowing the RNC’s roll call out of the water.“ They added, “it looks like a giant party and celebration and everyone in that room looks like they’re having a blast.”

Another commenter expressed their admiration for Cassidy's moment, writing, “I’m gonna call this moment with DJ Cassidy calling the roll call the greatest moment of the DNC.”
