Surfing photographer Andrew Blauschild dies after heart attack

The celebrated New York surfing photographer tragically died of a heart attack following a Montauk surf session.

Andrew Blauschild, a renowned surfing photographer from New York, tragically passed away on Monday, 19th August 2024, after suffering a heart attack shortly after surfing in Montauk. 

Reports indicate that Blauschild had just exited the water when he experienced the cardiac arrest that claimed his life.

Born in 1971, Blauschild was a well-respected figure in the photography world, particularly known for his work documenting the surfing culture of Montauk, Long Island, and beyond. His passion for photography began at the age of twelve while growing up in the Bronx. Educated at the University of Brooklyn, Blauschild later embraced surfing, eventually combining his two passions into a successful career as a surfing photographer.

In 2007, Blauschild founded Kookbox Surfboards, where he served as the creative director and photographer. He was celebrated for his innovative use of dye sublimation printing, a technique he mastered under the mentorship of renowned printer Charles Griffin. His work, which captured the essence of New York’s surfing community, has been featured in prestigious publications such as *The New York Times* and *The New York Observer*.

Blauschild’s sudden death has led to an outpouring of grief and tributes from friends, family, and admirers of his work. His legacy lives on through the powerful images that documented three decades of Montauk’s natural beauty and surf culture.
