US actor Michael Madsen was taken into custody on Saturday on charges of domestic battery, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

In a statement to the BBC, the department said its deputies responded to a "family disturbance" call shortly after midnight in Malibu, California.

The department reported that a woman claimed "her husband pushed her and locked her out of their residence."

Madsen, known for his roles in Quentin Tarantino's films Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, was later released on a $20,000 (£15,400) bond. The 66-year-old has not made any public comments on the matter.

"The investigation is ongoing and will be forwarded to the Van Nuys Superior Court House for filing," the sheriff's department added.

No additional details were provided in the statement.

A representative for Madsen told the Variety website that "it was a disagreement between Michael and his wife, which we hope resolves positively for them both."

Michael Madsen and DeAnna Madsen have been married for 28 years.

Madsen is most recognized for his portrayal of the psychopathic Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs and the assassin Budd in Kill Bill: Volume 2.
