PA session adjourned due to torrential rains

Elected members should be with their voters to assist them, says PPP MPA Agha Siraj Durrani

The Sindh Assembly session has been adjourned until August 27 due to the severe impact of recent monsoon rains across the province. The proposal for adjournment was submitted by former Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani and was met with no opposition from the assembly members.

The session, chaired by Speaker Syed Owais Qadir Shah, began at 3:18 PM on Monday. Agha Siraj Durrani, addressing the assembly on a point of order, highlighted the destruction caused by the recent rains in various parts of Sindh.

He emphasised the need for elected representatives to be present in their constituencies to assist those affected by the calamity, suggesting that the session be postponed for a week. The Speaker supported the proposal and sought the opinion of the House, which resulted in unanimous approval of the adjournment motion put forth by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Ziaul Hasan Lanjar.

During the session, PPP's Imdad Patafi raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway, citing recent fatal accidents, including one that claimed seven lives. He urged the government to expedite the completion of the motorway and to ensure vehicle fitness checks. The Speaker directed that the issue be referred to the Sindh Cabinet for further consideration.

Shabbir Qureshi of PTI supported Patafi's concerns, urging the government to ensure the motorway's completion during their tenure. In response, Nisar Ahmad Khoro of the Peoples Party clarified that the National Highway Authority, a federal body, is responsible for the project, not the Sindh government.
