Social media services, including Meta and Google services were disrupted across various parts of Pakistan on Thursday.

Outage tracking website Downdetector.com showed a spike in reports of disruptions for Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Gmail etc after 12:00 pm.

Internet service providers in Pakistan had earlier blamed the disruptions on government surveillance efforts aimed at enhancing security.

The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) claims that these measures have unintentionally crippled the nation's digital economy.

The cause of the service disruption remains unclear, and users are left in the dark about when the services will be restored.

The outage has sparked concern among social media users who utilise the platforms for communication, updates and livelihoods.
