Several participants of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally were affected owing to tear-gas shelling by the Rawalpindi police on Murree Road late on Tuesday. PTI activists had gathered to celebrate Independence Day. The police also detained more than 20 activists and locked them up in various police stations to thwart the PTI show.
PTI founder Imran Khan had sent a message to the party workers from jail to raise party flags, come out on the night of August 13 and raise slogans for real freedom.
A rally led by PTI leader Sambaya Tahir was held on Murree Road in Rawalpindi. A large number of men and women were present at the rally.
Policemen stopped the rally participants at various places by setting up blockades to disrupt the rally passing through Committee Chowk. The participants eventually scattered and the rally failed before reaching its destination.
PTI workers reorganised after 1am on Wednesday and marched towards Sixth Road via Murree Road, Liaquat Bagh in the form of the rally. A large number of workers shouted slogans. As soon as the rally reached Sixth Road, the police started tear gas shelling, leaving several participants affected and fainting.
Police sources said more than 20 PTI workers were detained.
