Arshad Nadeem, the superstar athlete who catapulted Pakistan's name onto the global stage with his javelin throw prowess, returned to his hometown of Mian Channu Chak 101 on Sunday with a celebration fit for a hero.
Following a warm welcome at Lahore Airport on Saturday night, the historic celebrations continued as Arshad made his way to Mian Channu.
Speaking to the media in his hometown, Arshad Nadeem expressed his gratitude, saying, "I worked incredibly hard, and Allah rewarded my efforts. My mother prayed for me day and night, and finally, I have brought home a gold medal for Pakistan."
"I will continue striving to break records and achieve even longer throws, aiming for 92.97 meters or beyond. I am deeply thankful to the government and the people for this historic reception," he added.
When asked about champion Neeraj Chopra of India, Arshad responded with grace, saying, "Neeraj is like a brother and a friend to me. Mothers are universal; my mother and Neeraj's mother both prayed for us. I am thrilled that Neeraj also won a medal, bringing pride to South Asia."
Arshad said he will keep working hard to represent Pakistan and win more medals.
Arshad also urged the government to expedite the completion of the stadium in Mian Channu and encouraged young people to work hard in whatever field they choose. "Hard work always pays off, whether in sports or any other endeavour," he added.
Earlier, as Arshad entered the city, the streets came alive with drumbeats, bhangra dances, bands, horse performances, and a shower of flower petals.
A large crowd gathered at the city's entrance, where excited fans danced to the rhythm of the dhol. Following the warm reception, Arshad headed to his native village escorted by a police squad in full protocol.
The preparations for Arshad's arrival had been completed well in advance. His village was adorned with giant banners and pennants celebrating his achievements.
Upon reaching Chak 101, Arshad was taken home to the sound of bands and music. Enthusiastic locals lifted him onto their shoulders, dancing joyfully as they carried him to his house.
There, his mother embraced him, kissed his forehead, and adorned him with garlands. The women of the house showered him with flower petals, while hundreds of his admirers filled the home, dancing and celebrating his return.
The festivities included a spectacular fireworks display in Arshad's honour.
