HYDERABAD:

Authorities have reported a moderate flood at Guddu Barrage and a low-level flood at Sukkur Barrage on the Indus River.

As water levels rise at Kotri Barrage, the monitoring of safety dams at various locations has intensified.

With a significant increase in water flow in the Indus River, the Flood Forecasting Division has declared a medium-level flood at Guddu Barrage and a low-level flood at Sukkur Barrage.

According to the latest data, the inflow at Guddu Barrage was recorded at 403,885 cusecs, with an outflow of 384,459 cusecs.

Meanwhile, Sukkur Barrage reported an inflow of 312,238 cusecs and an outflow of 282,888 cusecs.

Similarly, there has been a continuous rise in water levels at Kotri Barrage.

As of 6 pm. on Saturday, the inflow at Kotri Barrage upstream was recorded at 155,978 cusecs, with a downstream discharge of 115,703 cusecs. Due to this increased flow, substantial water has been released into the four canals originating from the barrage.

The Kotri Barrage Control Room reports that 7,150 cusecs have been released into the KB Feeder, 2,630 cusecs into Akram Wah, 11,350 cusecs into the Old Phuleli Canal, and 19,245 cusecs into the New Phuleli Canal.

Over the past five days, the downstream area of Kotri Barrage has seen an increase of 65,847 cusecs and 61,067 cusecs of water, leading to flooding in the Katcha areas.

In response, the Irrigation Department and District Administration have begun monitoring safety dams in Latifabad and Qasimabad.

In an effort to prevent potential damage from heavy rains and flash floods, 350 cusecs of water are being continuously released from Manchhar Lake, which currently has a water level of 111.35 RL. However, officials warn that if the water level in Manchhar Lake continues to rise and flash floods enter the lake, there could be a repeat of the 2022 situation, with a heightened risk of embankment breaches.
