The forest fire season which had been set by the Forest Department is expected to reach its end on August 15.
This fire season takes place every year from May 15 to August 15, during which arrangements are made to prevent forest fires which may be prone to catching in the extreme heat of the summer season.
This year there were several incidents of forest fires reported, specifically in Kotli Sattian, Murree and Kahuta. Although, these fires caused significant damage, they were less damaging than the fire incidents that occurred last year. This year, the department imposed further rules such as prohibiting matches, cigarette lighters, axes, knives or saws in all state forests during the forest fire season. Gas cylinders and other gas containers, as well as wood and coal fires for picnics were also banned. These measures led to a safer environment and lower incidence of fires catching in forests.
Director of Forests Saqib Mehmood Sheikh said “This year officers and field staff are also present in the forests in temporary camp offices. Strict monitoring of those going to and from the forests is being carried out, while dry trees and leaves in the forests were also removed in time.
It also helps that the monsoon rains have begun, which has lowered the chances of forest fires.
