Ranked: 2024 Horror Movies!

2024 has been a wild ride for horror movie enthusiasts.

From mind-bending psychological thrillers to spine-chilling supernatural tales, this year's lineup has delivered its fair share of frights and delights. We've seen horror movies that crawl under your skin, make you question your sanity, or simply offer a good scare while you munch on popcorn.

It's been a year where filmmakers have pushed boundaries, experimented with fresh concepts, and sometimes, well, completely missed the mark.

1. Night Swim (2024)

Possibly one of the weakest horror-fantasy movies that has come out in recent times. The film follows the story of a family that moves into a new home, unaware that a dark secret from the house's past will unleash a malevolent force in the backyard pool. The film is a whole bunch of nothing. The real horror is how hard it is to maintain a swimming pool. 

2. Immaculate (2024)

Talk about a let down. This was so hyped up on social media and Sydney Sweeney was praised for her performance, however, while the film is an enjoyable watch it is nothing groundbreaking. It is a mid level thriller with an immaculate ending. 

3. The First Omen (2024)

The First Omen is a standard spook-fest fare of a woman who starts to question her own faith when she uncovers a terrifying conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate in Rome. What the film lacks in terms of execution of the plot, it makes up for in its acting and cinematography. If you are a fun of the 1976 original, this might feel lacklustre and leave you scratching your head. 

4. Humane (2024)

Director Caitlin Cronenberg had a great and interesting concept for this film that is definitely worth exploring; a  global environmental collapse forces world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce Earth's population. It is a very real possibility and fresh take on horror, however Humane felt more like a first draft film than anything. 

5. The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024)

A classic horror concept - a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote cabin after their car breaks down. Panic ensues as they are terrorised by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive. The film is definitely not as bad as everyone makes it seem, of course it does have its flaws but it’s a great popcorn flick!

6. Stopmotion (2023)

The premise of Stopmotion had so much potential - a talented stop-motion animator becomes consumed by the grotesque world of her horrifying creations -- with deadly results. Unfortunately, it was wasted and ultimately fell flat. However, the film does have some great sequences throughout and beautiful sound design!

7. Abigail (2024)

Picture this - a group of criminals kidnap a young ballerina whose father just so happens to be a dangerous and powerful figure of the underworld. As they keep her hostage in an isolated mansion they soon realise she’s no ordinary little girl. Overall, Abigail is a fun popcorn flick and a decent horror comedy. 

8. Out of Darkness (2022)

In this atmospheric and environmental survival horror movie set in the Old Stone Age, a disparate gang of early humans band together in search of a new land. But when they suspect a malevolent, mystical being is hunting them down, the clan are forced to confront a danger they never envisioned. The film relies on shadows and crackling sounds. Although the running time could have definitely been shorter, it is a great premise nonetheless. 

9. Infested (2023)

The french horror flick will have your skin crawling. Residents of a rundown French apartment building battle against an army of deadly, rapidly producing spiders. If you didn’t have arachnophobia before, you might just after watching this. 

10. Late Night with the Devil (2023)

The film follows a live television event that went horribly wrong, reminiscent of the scene in 2019’s Joker. Although the CGI is a bit wonky at times, the cinematography is great. The film will definitely be a Halloween classic. 

11. The Coffee Table (2022)

Spanish-language horror-comedy The Coffee Table follows new parents Jesus and Maria who have decided to buy a new coffee table, a decision that will change their existence. The film is truly a masterpiece and is distinctly messed up but in a dark horror kind of way!
