KARACHI:

The top cop of the metropolitan city has revealed that target killers have intensified their attacks on police personnel in the teeming megalopolis.

“We are working to trace and arrest the network responsible for these violent acts,” AIG Javed Alam Odho said on Friday. “It is too early to determine the motives behind these attacks,” he added. “The task of identifying and arresting the perpetrators has been prioritised.”

AIG Odho was speaking at the inauguration of the Command and Control System Centre at Azizabad police station. He expressed a personal connection to Karachi’s Central District, which was his first posting, and acknowledged improvements in the security situation there. He referred to a recent shootout in which suspects involved in the killing of a police officer in the district were neutralised.

AIG Odho stressed the importance of CCTV cameras in modern policing. “Until the Safe City project is completed, the CCTV cameras installed by the public play a crucial role,” he said. He pointed out that Azizabad, a large area with several schools and gathering spots, benefits from advanced cameras that can clearly capture vehicle number plates and other critical details.

The city police chief said that there have been two notable cases of police target killings, with three out of five cases under investigation. The District Central police have resolved one case, while progress is being made in the other case, with arrests expected soon.
