Obaid K2 sentenced for killing Rangers man

ATC hands down 40-years jail term, R0.5m compensation to heirs of Dildar who was killed 26 years ago

The Special Anti-Terrorism Court No3 in the Anti-Terrorism Complex in Karachi Central Jail on Thursday pronounced the verdict in a murder case of Rangers personnel Dildar in Liaquatabad 26 years ago.

area and sentenced Obaid alias K2 of the then MQM to a total of 40 years imprisonment.

The judge said that the prosecution proved the crime beyond any doubt. The court also ordered the accused to pay Rs0.5 million as compensation to the heirs of the deceased.

Moreover, the court ordered the accused to be imprisoned for 10 years in attempted murder and to pay Rs100,000 as compensation to the injured Mumtaz Ali.

The court also sentenced Obaid alias K2 to 5 years in jail and a fine of Rs10,000 under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to the prosecution, accused Obaid alias K2, along with his colleagues, killed Rangers officer Dildar in Liaquatabad area in 1998. Nader Shah and Obaid were convicted in the case in 2002.

At the time of the sentence, Obaid was absconding. He was arrested in 2015 during an operation at Nine Zero.

Nader Shah and Obaid were awarded life term. The Sindh High Court annulled the decision of the trial court and ordered a re-trial on the petition of the accused Obaid against the sentence.

Acquited

A special anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi acquitted four MQM activists, including a central member, in the cases of kidnapping for ransom and illegal arms for lack of evidence after the prosecution failed to prove the guilt against the accused.

The acquitted MQM men include Raja Raees, Aqib Ali Khan, Shoaib Abdul Khaliq and Shiraz Iqbal.

Defence lawyer Latif Pasha Advocate had stated that the cases were made against the accused on the basis of false and fabricated allegations. The prosecution also lacks evidence to prove the charges. There are contradictions in the statements of the witnesses. So, the accused should be acquitted. According to the prosecution, a kidnapping-for-ransom incident took place in Korangi in the year 2021. A case was registered against the accused in Al Falah police station on the complaint of a citizen Hussain Bhatti.

Separate cases of arms recovery were also registered against the accused. Nine witnesses were made part of the case against the accused.

Bail extended

The special judge of the anti-corruption court in Karachi heard the plea and extended the bail of the accused involved in tampering with intermediate results and forgery. The court extended the bail of ex-chairman BIEK, Naseem Ahmad Memon, and other officers.
