The context of this confrontation includes Musk's previous criticism of Maduro's administration. Musk has labeled Maduro a dictator, especially following the disputed results of the Venezuelan Presidential elections, where both Maduro and his rivals claimed victory. Despite the controversy, Maduro has remained the de facto ruler of Venezuela since 2014. In response, Maduro has called Musk an "archenemy of the nation's peace."

Adding to the international dimension, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Maduro on what has been described as a rigged election win.
