Assistant Director of Revenue at the water corporation, Mirza Ikhlaq Baig, who exposed one of the largest water theft operations in Karachi’s history, has been suspended from his position. According to Express News, he was removed after uncovering a scheme involving the theft of billions of rupees worth of water.
Baig discovered over 100 illegal connections siphoning water from main supply lines in Karachi's SITE area. Despite threats and offers of bribes from the water mafia, he reported the findings to higher authorities and requested the disconnection of the illegal taps. His efforts led to over 40 threatening calls and serious repercussions.
Baig’s exposure to illegal activities was met with internal resistance. Instead of receiving support, he faced suspension, allegedly due to pressure from the Anti-Theft Cell and the Engineering Department.
Sources indicate that the water corporation’s Anti-Theft Cell and Engineering Department are deeply compromised, resulting in prolonged water shortages in central Karachi districts.
Despite attempts to address these issues, including raids in Nazimabad, the systemic corruption appears unchecked. Repeated attempts to contact the Managing Director of the Water Corporation for a statement were unsuccessful.
