Saudi Arabia's city AlUla has garnered global attention, securing two spots on TIME's prestigious 2024 ‘World’s Greatest Places’ list.
The ancient oasis in northwest Saudi Arabia stood out for its rich cultural heritage and sustainable tourism initiatives.
Dar Tantora The House Hotel, which opened in May 2024, made the list. Nestled in AlUla Old Town, this eco-lodge boasts 30 guest rooms restored from historical mud-brick buildings, offering a blend of traditional Bedouin living and luxury.
The ancient city, with over 800 years of history, was recognised by the UNWTO as one of the Best Tourism Villages in 2022.
Sharaan Nature Reserve was also honoured.
Spanning nearly 600 square miles, Sharaan is dedicated to restoring AlUla’s ecosystem. It supports endangered species such as Arabian wolves, gazelles, and Arabian leopards, promoting rewilding and preservation.
TIME’s list, vetted by its global correspondents, highlights destinations offering unique experiences. The recognition underscores AlUla's commitment to sustainable development and cultural preservation.
“We are elated by the recognitions awarded to our destination’s offerings by TIME in their renowned World’s Greatest Places,” said Rami AlMoallim, Vice President of Destination Management and Marketing at the Royal Commission for AlUla.
“These exceptional sentiments reflect the excellence and dedication of AlUla's efforts to preserve and promote its unique cultural heritage.”
AlUla, known for its mountains, desert landscapes, and heritage sites, continues to be a beacon for sustainable tourism. Its "Forever Revitalising" campaign highlights this dedication.
Located 1,100 km from Riyadh, AlUla spans 22,561km² and features a lush oasis, sandstone mountains, and ancient cultural sites.
Notable attractions include Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Dadan, one of the most developed 1st millennium BCE cities in the Arabian Peninsula.
