Jennifer Garner has made headlines with a playful jab at her ex-husband Ben Affleck in the new film Deadpool & Wolverine.
The sequel, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, marks Garner’s return to her role as Elektra, a character she first portrayed nearly two decades ago.
In a recent scene, Reynolds’ Deadpool offers condolences to former Marvel characters who have perished in a dystopian world where timelines and variants are erased. When Daredevil is mentioned—referencing the character Affleck famously played—Garner’s Elektra quips, “Oh, it’s fine,” in a nod to the absence of Affleck’s character.
Garner and Affleck first starred together in the 2003 film Daredevil, where Garner’s portrayal of Elektra was introduced. She later reprised the role in the 2005 standalone film Elektra. The couple married in 2009, had three children, and divorced in 2015, with their divorce finalized in 2018.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Garner humorously reflected on her experience wearing Elektra’s iconic costume. She recounted the difficulties of being sewn into the tight-fitting outfit and managing numerous fake enhancements to achieve the character’s look. “I had to be cut out of and sewn into the pleather pants every time I had to pee,” Garner shared. “There’s not enough tape in the world to make this stuff safe.”
Garner’s dedication to her role included extensive martial arts training, and she admitted to frequent wardrobe challenges while filming.
Beyond Deadpool & Wolverine, Garner is known for her roles in action films such as The Kingdom (2007) and Peppermint (2018). In promoting Peppermint, she expressed a desire for more action roles with high stakes, saying, “The drama has to be real, and the reason for risk has to be the highest imaginable.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is currently in theaters, offering fans a mix of action, humor, and familiar faces from the Marvel universe.
