It's been more than six years since the beloved masked anti-hero graced the screen in Deadpool 2. With the eagerly awaited third installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, just days away, it's the perfect moment to revisit Ryan Reynolds's second adventure as the R-rated superhero.

Deadpool 2 continues directly from the first film, kicking off with an exhilarating scene where Wade battles international mobsters, all set to Dolly Parton's classic "9-to-5."

The familiar formula of guns, violence, and mayhem, accompanied by iconic music, draws the audience back into the quick-witted, irreverent humor that defines Deadpool’s charm. However, it doesn’t quite prepare viewers for what happens next…

In contrast to the origin story of Deadpool, the sequel offers a darker and more intense look at the challenges of being a vigilante and the inevitable consequences of being a widely recognized masked mercenary.

Teaming up with the time-traveling cyborg soldier Cable (Josh Brolin) and the vengeful young mutant Russell (Julian Dennison), Wade faces the challenge of balancing his dual identities: the hero everyone expects him to be and the anti-hero he must actually embody.

Deadpool 2 also introduced Wade's makeshift X-Men team, X-Force, most of whom die on their initial mission, except for Peter, whom Wade travels back in time to rescue in the post-credit scene. With this background in mind, several crucial plot elements are expected to influence the upcoming X-Men MCU crossover in Deadpool & Wolverine.

What goes down with Vanessa in Deadpool 2?

Following the high-octane opening of Deadpool 2, the pace slows down as Wade goes back home to his live-in girlfriend, Vanessa. They settle into domestic life, celebrating their anniversary with gifts and discussing their hopes for the future, including starting a family.

However, their joyful moment is abruptly shattered when the door is blasted open and a group of assailants storm into the apartment, firing at Wade and Vanessa. Vanessa hides behind the sofa, and to Wade's relief, she appears unharmed when he goes to check on her.

She timidly emerges from behind the sofa, only for a lone gunman to appear and fire a fatal shot directly at her heart. Wade, powerless to help, watches in anguish and rage as she falls to the living room floor and dies.

Overwhelmed by grief, Wade grapples with moving on from this immense loss and carries the weight of her death with him throughout the film.

What went down with Wade in Deadpool 2?

Fueled by his anger and distress, Wade finds himself in the ice-box with his new fire-wielding ally, Russell. It is here that he encounters the time-traveling soldier Cable, who possesses a device capable of moving between the present and the future, specifically to the time when his family was killed.

At the film's conclusion, Wade sacrifices himself to save Russell. However, Cable travels back in time and alters the timeline, ultimately rescuing Wade.

Cable realizes that his family is safe when he sees his daughter's unscathed teddy bear, a sign that Deadpool's heroic act has altered Russell's future.

Cable was originally able to use the slider only twice: once to travel back in time to kill Russell, who would eventually murder his family, and once to return to the present. However, he used it to save Wade instead.

In the post-credit scene, it’s shown that Wade has his X-Men allies repair the slider, allowing him to travel through time as frequently and to any point he wishes.

Naturally, he travels back in time to prevent Vanessa's shooting before embarking on a nostalgic journey through his past.

Is Wolverine in Deadpool 2?

Technically, Deadpool & Wolverine will mark the first on-screen reunion of the pair since X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, Logan does make an appearance in the post-credit scene of Deadpool 2.

During his time travels, Wade stops by to visit Wolverine and the earlier version of Wade Wilson from the 2009 movie, who had his mouth sewn shut after undergoing experiments by General Stryker.

Wade shoots his former self from the 2009 movie, who had his mouth sewn shut due to General Stryker's experiments, to erase the memory of that less developed version of his character criticized for deviating from the comics. During this scene, he encounters Logan, but Logan doesn’t react.

At the beginning of the film, Deadpool makes a brief “f*** Wolverine” remark following the emotional, selfless death of Logan in the 2017 film. Wade also has a tiny music box featuring a replica of Logan being impaled.

These comedic references set the stage for the rivalry, chemistry, and Easter eggs that will feature in their crossover in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool 2 and Deadpool are currently available for streaming on Disney Plus. Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled to hit theaters on Thursday, July 25.
