Cameras are being used to spot smoke-emitting vehicles as part of artificial intelligence and electronic traffic policing launched in Punjab.
The traffic police in Lahore have begun issuing challans to vehicles emitting excessive smoke traced through the Safe City Authority cameras. Electronic challans will be issued for violations of traffic and environmental laws.
The smoke levels of vehicles, including motorcycles and rickshaws, will be monitored with modern cameras.
Photos and videos of smoke-emitting vehicles will be included in the electronic ticket.
The traffic police are conducting both electronic and manual surveillance to inspect trucks, buses, cars, wagons, rickshaws and motorcycles causing smog.
Provincial Senior Minister Mariyum Aurangzeb stated that the culture of traffic policing in Punjab is transforming. She said the authorities were leveraging modern technology and cameras to ensure both environmental protection and the enforcement of traffic laws.
The government plans to implement a modern electronic traffic policing system in every city of Punjab in a phased manner.
The senior minister expressed optimism that with the cooperation of citizens, Punjab will become a model province with smog-free roads and modern policing.
