After almost a month long and recently unprecedented long spell of hot and humid days and nights in Hyderabad, the heavens eventually opened over the city in the wee hours of Friday. However, the rainfall did not last much longer as a maximum of 34 millimetre and a minimum of 19 mm was recorded in two different parts of the district.
Interestingly, the accumulation of rainwater was not witnessed on the major roads in Hyderabad. However, power outages ensued with the downpour. In Hyderabad, it appeared as if the entire city has been blacked out. However, the spokesman of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) Sadiq Kubar claimed that 59 out of 135 feeders of 11 KV were shut down for safety reasons.
According to him, they had also received reports about the falling of trees and signboards. A total of 190 feeders of 11 KV were shut down in the HESCO region. It also rained in Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Badin, Thatta, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas and other districts of Sindh. The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded up to 17 mm in Badin, 15 mm in Thatta, 14 mm in Tharparkar and 9 mm in Mirpurkhas.
Power outages
The Mayor of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC) Kashif Ali Shoro has held Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) responsible for making lives of citizens miserable during intense summer heat by continuing the outages. He also complained in a meeting with Chief Executive Officer of HESCO Roshan Otho on Friday that water shortage and drainage problems are also being caused by the outages.
Shoro said the process of water filtration is halted many times a day in the plants of Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Board Corporation (HW&SBC) owing to the scheduled and unscheduled load shedding. Consequently, the water supply to the city is also stopped repeatedly on daily basis, resulting in scarcity during simmering weather in many parts of the city.
The Mayor also pointed out that the drainage pumping stations of the corporation also stop working repeatedly in a day because of the outages, letting the drains spillover on the roads. He said the load shedding has aggravated problems of the people who are already finding it hard to survive during hot and humid days of the ongoing summer season. The mayor asked the HESCO's chief to address the issues which have been identified in the meeting.
Squall trips 190 feeders
Heavy stormy winds and rain last night tripped almost 190 feeders of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) region, due to which, the power supply to these feeders was stopped. The supply to 59 out of 135 feeders in the city was also stopped.
According to HESCO spokesperson, Sadiq Kubbar, after considering the emergency situation and getting reports of falling trees and signboards in various areas, HESCO CEO Muhammad Roshan Otho reached the power control centre and monitored the power restoration efforts.
