Makeup trends are constantly evolving, with each era showcasing its signature looks.

The 2020s are a diverse mix, featuring everything from artistic and dramatic makeup to the minimalist clean girl aesthetic, as well as strawberry makeup, espresso makeup, siren makeup, and the classic full beat.

Amidst these changing trends, one thing has remained constant: the younger generation's unwavering love for lip gloss. This enduring popularity has led to a surge of glossy lip products hitting the market and going viral, as companies compete to outshine one another.

Key players in the lip oil, tint, and gloss arena include Summer Fridays’ Butter Lip Balm, Hailey Bieber's Rhode Skin Peptide Lip Treatment and Tint, Gisou's Lip Oil, Dior's Lip Glow Oil, and Selena Gomez's Soft Pinched Tinted Lip Oil from Rare Beauty.

Recently, the fashion-tech Instagram page @databutmakeitfashion conducted a sentiment analysis, revealing that

Summer Fridays Butter Lip Balm is the standout lip product of the summer.

According to their findings, it is 117% more popular on average compared to the other mentioned lip glosses and balms, securing its place as the must-have lip gloss of the season.

In an Instagram post on Sunday (14th July) @databutmakeitfashion declared the lip gloss of the summer to their 342K followers. Madé Lapuerta (the creator behind the page) stated, "For this one - I pulled hundreds of online posts referencing the different lip gloss products and ran a sentiment analysis to compare the popularity of each!!"

The Summer Fridays lip balm has achieved legendary status on TikTok. With a celebrity fan base that includes Rihanna, you might be sceptical about whether it lives up to the hype. But rest assured, it does. Since its launch in 2020, it has been so successful that it led to the brand’s newest product: the Dream Lip Oil. Before diving into this new offering, let’s explore what makes the original lip balm so exceptional.

The balm features a mask-like formula enriched with conditioning agents like shea and murumuru seed butter, providing a glossy finish in any of its seven tints. “We wanted to create something that was nourishing, not sticky, but still felt balmy and smooth,” explained Summer Fridays founders Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Ireland in an interview with Vogue.

The tints are as impressive as the formulation itself, working beautifully both with lip liners and on their own. Simply put, it’s everything a modern lip product should be, ensuring your lips are enveloped in a glossy sheerness.

With so many lip care options available (think: lipsticks, stains, tints, etc.), you might wonder why choose an oil format. According to Hewitt and Ireland, it’s all about maintaining the effortless vibe that Summer Fridays is famous for. A tinted lip oil is a natural extension of your morning skincare and complexion routine. “Because a lip oil is not quite a lipstick, it still has that lip care-skin care benefit when you're applying it to the skin,” Hewitt explains.

The formula is led by nine plant-based oils, including castor, jojoba, avocado, apricot, grape seed, raspberry, shea, and rosa canina fruit oil. It also includes plant-based collagen, squalane, and vitamin E to lock in moisture, resulting in softer, plumper lips. The texture is particularly noteworthy, feeling uniquely plush and almost satin-like (not glossy!) on the lips, but most importantly—it's weightless, non-sticky, and has a refreshing minty feel. The finish is sheer but buildable, offering versatility.

There are four shades to choose from: Pink Cloud (a rich pink), Soft Mauve (a favourite of Hewitt’s), Blush Dream (a favourite of Ireland’s), and Rosewood Nights (a rosy brown).

The large doe-foot applicator makes it incredibly easy to apply, ensuring a streak-free finish with ease.

You can even apply it without a mirror and trust it will look perfect!
