An unearthed interview with Christian Bale sheds new light on Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's “The Dark Knight”.

Originally published by THR and featured in the new book ‘100 Things Batman Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die’, the interview highlights Ledger’s extraordinary commitment to the role.

Bale recounts Ledger’s commitment to the role during the iconic interrogation scene. “

Heath was behaving in a very similar fashion. He was kinda egging me on. I was saying, ‘You know what, I really don’t need to actually hit you. It’s going to look just as good if I don’t.’ And he’s going, ‘Go on. Go on. Go on,’” Bale recalls.

The intensity was so palpable that Ledger even slammed himself into tiled walls, which were cracked and dented from his efforts.

Ledger's dedication to his role in “The Dark Knight” was evident, as he pushed himself to the limit to bring a visceral authenticity to the Joker’s character.

Despite Ledger's tragic death before the film’s release in 2008, his performance earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a testament to his extraordinary commitment.

While Ledger's portrayal of the Joker has been celebrated for its raw intensity, Bale admits his own performance in the trilogy left him feeling unsatisfied, stating he felt he “didn’t quite nail it.”

Since Ledger’s iconic role, other actors like Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, and Barry Keoghan have taken on the Joker, with Phoenix also receiving an Oscar for his portrayal.
