HYDERABAD:

An explosion-triggered collapse of a large part of Jamshoro police station (PS) on Wednesday morning left five policemen and a suspect in the lockup injured. The police officers believe that simmering temperature caused a blast in hand grenades placed in the station’s maal khana [depository] that caved in. However, an inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the actual cause of explosion.

The injured include ASIs Muhammad Bux Dawach and Rasool Bux Narejo, head constable Abdul Lateef Panhwar, constables Ghulam Muhammad and Irshad Ali.

Jamshed Sanjrani, an arrested suspect, was also hurt in the explosion. All of them were shifted to Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad.

Four motorbikes and two rickshaws parked inside the police station were destroyed.

SSP Tariq Nawaz said while talking to the media, the police station was sealed immediately after the explosion and a team of the Bomb Disposal Squad was called in to inspect the premises.

Meanwhile, DIG Tariq Razzak Dharejo, who also immediately reached the spot, ruled out the possibility of terrorism. He also mentioned that the hand grenades placed in the maal khana seem to be the probable cause.

The Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar were also briefed about the incident. Lanjar directed the DIG to provide quality healthcare to the injured. A police official, who requested anonymity, questioned how the grenades can explode when immediately after the recovery from the suspects such explosive materials are deactivated. The incident’s FIR could not be registered by Thursday night.
