Hundreds of heatstroke cases reported during Ashura processions in Karachi

Dozens of photographers and cameramen also affected by the heat

KARACHI:

As Karachi grappled with scorching temperatures, hundreds fell victim to the intense heat during Ashura processions on Wednesday, prompting urgent medical responses across the city's hospitals.

According to reports from Jinnah Hospital, a temporary camp set up for emergencies during the procession reported over 200 cases by 1 PM. Similarly, Civil Hospital Karachi recorded 240 cases of heatstroke, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The extreme heat severely affected participants in the processions, many of whom were rushed to various medical camps set up by non-governmental organisations where medical aid was provided.

In light of these developments, authorities advised residents, particularly the elderly and children, to stay hydrated and remain indoors during peak heat hours. Medical camps were also set up across the city, reporting over 500 cases by 2 PM to ensure immediate medical attention to all affected individuals.

Dr Khalid Bakari of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Dr Shahid Rasool, Director at Jinnah Hospital, warned about the ongoing heatwave in Karachi and recommended precautionary measures such as applying water to the head and relocating to cooler areas in case of dizziness.

Dr Ghulam Nabi Shah Jalani, MS Doctor at Saudabad, reported more than 300 people affected by heatstroke at Milleer District Hospital on the occasion of Ashura. 

Additionally, Abbasid Hospital authorities confirmed the admission of over 300 heatstroke victims, including a large number of mourners. Meanwhile, Liaquat University Hospital in Hyderabad admitted 172 individuals suffering from heat exhaustion on the day of Ashura. 

Similar scenes were observed at New Karachi Hospital and Lyari Hospital, where numerous mourners from the heatwave-stricken Ashura processions received medical attention. Moreover, Korangi Government Hospital also admitted several individuals affected by the heatwave. 

On Ashura, dozens of photographers and cameramen were also affected by the heat, highlighting the widespread impact of the current heatwave in Karachi.
