A soldier was stabbed and injured by a knife-wielding assailant at Paris' Gare de l'Est railway station, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Monday, just days before the city hosts the summer Olympic Games. The attacker has been arrested, and the soldier's injuries are not life-threatening.
France remains on its highest state of alert. The soldier was part of Operation Sentinelle, a 3,000-strong unit deployed to patrol key locations including railway stations, places of worship, schools, and theatres. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal added another 3,000 troops to the Sentinelle force.
The motive behind the attack is currently unknown.
