In a significant move impacting households across Pakistan, the federal government announced a substantial increase in electricity tariffs, affecting millions of consumers across the country, Express News reported.
For households consuming up to 200 units per month, a temporary exemption from the increase will be applied for three months. However, for all other residential users, the cost of electricity will see notable rises.
As per the new tariff structure, according to a notification issued by the Power Division, the base rate for electricity has reached as high as Rs48.84 per unit.
Specifically, households using between 201 and 300 units per month will now pay PKR 34.26 per unit, reflecting a Rs7.12 increase. Those consuming between 301 and 400 units will see their tariff rise to Rs39.15 per unit, up by Rs7.02. For higher usage brackets, such as 401-500 units, the new rate is Rs41.36 per unit, an increase of Rs6.12.
This tariff adjustment comes as the government seeks to address financial exigencies and stabilise the national power sector, which has been under financial strain.
