Brain eating amoeba claims two lives

KARACHI:

Naegleria fowleri, also known as brain eating amoeba, has taken two lives in the city this year, the Sindh health department confirmed.

The victims, 35-year-old Muhammad Ali Memon from district east, who died in a private hospital after suffering from high fever for ten days, and 22-year-old Aurangzeb from Landhi, who passed away after suffering from fever, nausea, and headache.

Family of Muhammad Ali Memon believes the infection may have occurred while washing face or taking bath, while Aurangzeb had recently visited a water park with friends.

Meanwhile, the health department is actively investigating the cases. The department has also organised awareness sessions while chlorine tablets are also being distributed among citizens. Meanwhile, chlorination efforts are also underway in the suspected areas.
