Probe initiated against Sindh varsity’s VC over alleged nepotism

Sindh's Universities and Boards Department has launched an inquiry against the vice chancellor (VC) of Sindh University, Jamshoro campus, following a complaint regarding alleged favouritism in promotions.

The complaint was lodged by Muhammad Abdul Razzaq Chachar, a professor in the university's Media and Communication Studies Department and nephew of a close associate of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

Chachar lodged the complaint after allegedly being overlooked for promotion by the university's Selection Board. A letter from the Chief Minister's Secretariat directed the Universities and Boards Department to conduct an inquiry into the allegations against the VC, Professor Dr Muhammad Sadiq Kalhoro.

Subsequently, the Universities and Boards Department's secretary formally sought information from the VC regarding the promotion process.

When approached for comment, the university's spokesperson, Nadeem Mugheri, said he was unaware of any inquiry, while attempts to reach VC for his version were also unsuccessful.

In his complaint, Chachar claimed that promotions within the Media and Communication Studies Department were unfairly granted, bypassing seniority and merit-based criteria. He cited instances where teachers lacking required research papers were promoted over him, despite his seniority.

The controversy extends beyond individual grievances. The inquiry seeks to address these allegations and assess the integrity of the promotion process at Sindh University.
