GUJRAT:

A newborn byby girl abducted from Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Hospital in Gujrat was found dead on Saturday.

The police have arrested the accused, a woman named Shazia, after uncovering the tragic sequence of events. DSP Amir Abbas said on July 9, an FIR was registered at Civil Line Police Station on the complaint of Shahbaz, the father of the abducted infant.

Following the abduction, District Police Officer (DPO) Gujrat Mustansar Bajwa formed multiple teams to locate the kidnapper.

Shazia, the suspect, was arrested from Warpal Chatha village in Wazirabad. During interrogation, she confessed that the newborn had died.

She detailed how she had taken a rickshaw from the hospital to Shaheen Chowk, then changed rickshaws multiple times, reaching Allah Hu Chowk in Wazirabad, then Gujranwala’s Alipur Chowk, and finally her in-laws' village, Warpal Chatha.

The infant's condition worsened, and Shazia admitted her to a hospital where the baby died.

The baby was then brought back to the village, where a proper funeral was held, attended by relatives and locals, to avoid any suspicion.

DSP Amir Abbas revealed that Shazia, a mother of two, had divorced her first husband eight years ago, leaving her children with him. She remarried Mushtaq from Warpal Chatha seven or eight years ago but had no children with him. Under pressure from her in-laws, she concocted a plan to abduct a newborn and claimed she was pregnant. She moved to her sister's house in Gujrat's Madina Syedan village to execute her plan, pretending to receive prenatal care from Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Hospital. Shazia seized an opportunity to abduct the newborn from the hospital's gynecology ward.

Although she had no mobile phone, initial CCTV footage from the hospital and a tip from a health worker in another district helped track her down. The newborn’s relatives identified Shazia, leading the police to her village, where she was taken into custody.
