Kapil Dev, the legendary cricketer who captained India to its first World Cup victory in 1983, has announced that he will be donating his pension to help fund the treatment of former cricketer Anushman Gaikwad.
Gaikwad is currently battling blood cancer and is receiving treatment at a hospital in London.
In addition to his personal pledge, Kapil Dev has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide financial assistance to Gaikwad.
He has expressed hope that the BCCI will consider the request and offer support for Gaikwad’s medical expenses.
Kapil Dev’s appeal is backed by several former players, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patel, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirit Abad, who are also working to raise funds for Gaikwad’s treatment.
Kapil Dev highlighted the disparity between current and former players, noting that while today’s cricketers enjoy substantial earnings, there was little support available for players during his era.
He emphasized that a formal system to support former players was lacking and hoped that the BCCI would take action to rectify this situation.
Previously, India's World Cup-winning cricket captain Kapil Dev was appointed president of the Professional Golf Tour of India.
Dev, 65, was one of the world greatest all-rounders who led India to their first World Cup triumph in 1983 and ended his glittering career in 1994 with 434 Test wickets and 5,248 runs.
