Balochistan government enhances security for Muharram, suspends mobile services

Home minister Meer Ziaullah Langau says 8,000 security personnel to be deployed in Quetta on Ashura.

The Balochistan government has announced the suspension of mobile phone and internet services in Quetta on Muharram 7 and 10 and imposed Section 144 in seven districts as part of steps to scale up security measures during Muharram.

Balochistan Home Minister Meer Ziaullah Langau stated on Friday that cellular and internet services will be suspended from 6 am to midnight on these days.

Muharram, which began on July 8, sees faithful holding processions and majalis nationwide, with religious scholars addressing large gatherings under tight security. Thousands of law enforcers are deployed to ensure safety during these events.

During a review of security arrangements in Quetta, Langau revealed that 8,000 security personnel will be deployed in the city on Ashura, the 10th of Muharram. Additionally, five Quick Response Force platoons of the Pakistan Army will be on standby.

Mobile services will also be suspended in Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad, and Usta Muhammad districts on Muharram 9 and 10. The provincial government has banned pillion riding and imposed Section 144 from Muharram 1 to 10 in seven districts.

Langau emphasised the government’s responsibility to maintain law and order, confirming that security arrangements for Muharram have been finalized.

On July 8, the federal government approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces (CAF) nationwide as a security measure for Muharram.

According to an interior ministry notification, the details of troop deployment will be finalized with the relevant authorities, and the date for ending the deployment will be decided after mutual consultation among all stakeholders.
