ISLAMABAD:

Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq will take up today (Thursday) a petition filed against appointment of IHC judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri while also reviewing the objections raised to the petition by the court’s registrar office.

A habitual petitioner, Mian Daud, has challenged Justice Jahangiri’s appointment under Article 199 of the Constitution through a writ of quo warranto.

The writ of quo warranto is primarily based on the 1998 Supreme Court judgment in Justice Sajjad Ali Shah case. The petition claims that Justice Jahangiri’s appointment is unconstitutional due to an allegedly invalid degree and requests that his appointment be declared null and void.

A social media campaign was recently initiated against the IHC judge, claiming that his LLB degree—from the University of Karachi—was invalid. A larger bench of the IHC including all the IHC judges excluding Justice Jahangiri later initiated contempt proceedings against the people responsible for the campaign and issued notices to three journalists and social media influencers on July 8.
