Hoda Kotb surprised over Sophie Turner's nationality

During an episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, Kotb was shocked upon learning Sophie Turner's British nationality.

Even celebrities occasionally mix up facts about Hollywood's biggest stars, just like the rest of us.

During the July 9 episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, Hoda Kotb confessed she didn't realize the actress was British. “First of all, I did not know she was British,” Kotb, 59, expressed surprise while talking with cohost Jenna Bush Hager. “I really didn’t. I had no idea. Have I not heard her speak? Was that the first time?” 

Bush Hager, 42, noted that Turner, 28, notably used her British accent on the popular series Game of Thrones, a show that Kotb doesn't seem to have followed. Kotb commented, "Not everybody’s glued to all the things. Some people put on a British accent to act.” 

After Bush Hager replied, saying, “Well, that’s true,” Kotb broke into a fit of giggles.

This arose during a discussion about Turner’s new St-Germain Liqueur ad, where she appears to list her ideal qualities in a romantic partner while ordering a drink at a bar.

“I’m looking for something different, fresh, fun. I’m very particular. … Has to be bright, obviously, bubbly, the type that’s welcome at any party. Sweet but not too sweet. Am I asking too much or do you think I’ll find it?” Turner asks the bartender, who tells her she already has. Picking up the drink the bartender serves her, she states, “Truly the whole package.”

After viewing the ad, Kotb remarked that Turner is “having it her way.” Bush Hager added, “I think she’ll find it alright.”

Turner ignited relationship rumors with her boyfriend, Peregrine Pearson, soon after her breakup with Joe Jonas. The couple had been married for four years before Jonas, 34, filed for divorce in September 2023.

In a joint statement, the exes explained, "There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children." Turner and Jonas have two daughters, Willa, 3, and Delphine, 2.

Two months after their temporary custody agreement expired in January, Turner filed legal documents in Florida to reactivate their divorce case. A representative for Jonas clarified in a statement to Us Weekly in March that the "filing was a legal formality, and the couple is still working towards a friendly resolution." Jonas submitted new court documents in May to extend their settlement discussions.

During her divorce proceedings, Turner made her relationship with Pearson, 29, public on Instagram in January. It appears that the relationship between the pair has become that of a close one. According to an exclusive source from Us, “[She] never expected to find someone she cares about this quickly,”  adding that Turner “couldn’t help but fall” for Pearson. 

Turner recently announced her plans to enjoy a "hot-girl summer" on Monday, July 8 in an interview with Harper's Bazaar. “My recipe for a hot-girl summer is pretty much playing with my kids, hanging out with my best friends, drinking some cocktails—you know, which ones—and enjoying the sun, long may it last,” She mentioned, "As long as the sun’s out, I’m a happy chap."
