Kylian Mbappe, the football sensation and World Cup winner, faced a tough outing at Euro 2024, admitting after France's semi-final loss that the tournament was a "failure."

The £190m forward, who made a blockbuster move to Real Madrid this summer, had high hopes as he led France into the tournament, only to fall short against Spain in Munich.

Despite his stellar performances in previous World Cups, including a hat-trick in the 2022 final that drew comparisons with Sir Geoff Hurst, Mbappe's magic seemed to wane this Euro season.

He notably struggled, scoring just a solitary penalty in the group stage and missing a crucial penalty in Euro 2020 that led to France's elimination.

Throughout Euro 2024, Mbappe managed nine shots on target but only created a mere three chances, showcasing a surprising dip in form compared to his explosive World Cup stats.

His highlight was an assist for Randal Kolo Muani's goal against Spain, yet it wasn't enough to steer France to victory.

Rio Ferdinand, commenting on BBC One, noted, "That is not enough in a game of this magnitude. Mbappe will be disappointed with his tournament. This is not what we have come to expect."

Adding to his challenges, Mbappe suffered a broken nose in the opening match against Austria, which sidelined him for the next game and visibly affected his play even upon his return.

"It was everything," Mbappe admitted, discussing the impact of his injury and the mask he had to wear, which he later discarded in the Spain match.

French football expert Julien Laurens captured the moment, saying on BBC Radio 5 Live, "Mbappe didn't take his chance and, when it mattered the most, France lacked a bit of magic."

Despite the setback, Mbappe is looking ahead to his new chapter with Real Madrid, alongside stars like Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.

"I'll be going on holiday," Mbappe stated, anticipating a strong return in a new city under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
