Karachi sees light to moderate rain showers as monsoon spell continues

KARACHI:

After the first significant downpour on Monday which brought much-needed relief to the city from weeks of sweltering heat, Karachi is experiencing light showers in several areas today.

The monsoon spell, which began yesterday, has continued today, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting more rain in the coming days.

Several areas including Rashid Minhas Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar are currently experiencing drizzles accompanied by cool winds.

Earlier, The National Emergency Operations Center issued an alert warning that the current monsoon system could impact Sindh within the next 12 to 24 hours.

Yesterday, areas such as Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Surjani Town, and North Nazimabad saw rainfall, while various other parts of the city experienced light rain accompanied by strong winds.

The temperature of Karachi is recorded at 35 C and is likely to drop following rainfall in different regions.

Earlier, the Met Office had forecast isolated dust thunderstorms with rain in some areas of the city today.

In preparation for the upcoming monsoon, the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) of Karachi has declared a rain emergency, appointing special teams for the timely drainage of rainwater.

A CBC spokesperson announced that 1,288 staffers have been assigned special duties under the rain emergency plan, with 638 staffers in seven sectors and 650 dedicated to rainwater drainage.

As the rain continues, residents are hopeful that the cooler weather will persist, providing much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat. The authorities have also urged citizens to take necessary precautions and avoid venturing out during heavy downpours to ensure their safety
