KARACHI:

Sindh government should take immediate notice of Pakistan Fisher Folk Forum protest over the highhandedness of landlords in Sindh, said Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan MPAs on Monday.

The authorities should listen to the legitimate demands of the fishermen community and address their genuine issues, the lawmakers said.

Influential landlords have illegally occupied freshwater reservoirs particularly the Kakahu Lake in Sanghar, the MPAs said referring to the PFF protest. Influential landlords have made it impossible for poor and vulnerable fishermen to fish in these areas, which is a reprehensible practice.

MQM-P took a strong exception to media reports on the atrocities of the politically powerful and influential landlords on the poor and vulnerable fishermen in Sindh.

They said that actions such as occupation of freshwater lakes by influential people, depriving fishermen of their fishing rights and implicating them in false cases should be stopped immediately.

The elected members of MQM-P said they will also raise their voice in the Sindh Assembly over the atrocities against fishermen.

Landlords, under ruling Pakistan Peoples Party government in Sindh for the past 16 years, have taken away right to live from the poor people of the province, they said.
